Why Eye Exams Are Necessary

Regular eye exams are essential for maintaining healthy vision and overall wellness. Even if you do not notice changes in your eyesight, many common eye conditions develop gradually and may not show symptoms in the early stages. Routine exams help detect and manage:

  • Digital eye strain from prolonged screen use
  • Glare while driving
  • Dry eye and discomfort
  • Refractive errors such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, or presbyopia
  • Common eye diseases, including cataracts, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration

Early detection allows for timely treatment, preserving your vision and preventing complications.

How Often Eye Exams Are Recommended

At Tally Eyeglassery, we generally recommend:

  • Adults under 40: every year, even if no vision issues are present
  • Adults 40-64: every year, maybe more, depending on health and vision needs
  • Seniors 65 and older: annually. Did you know: The risk for eye conditions increases with age

Dr. Neal will recommend a personalized schedule based on your eye health, family history, and lifestyle factors.

How to Prepare for Your Exam

To get the most from your visit:

  • Bring your current glasses or contact lenses
  • List any medications or supplements you take
  • Provide your insurance information if applicable
  • Plan to arrive a few minutes early to complete any necessary forms
  • Most exams do not require dilation, but your optometrist will let you know if any additional tests are recommended

What to Expect During Your Exam

During your appointment, our team uses diagnostic technology to provide a thorough assessment of your eyes and vision. Your exam may include:

  • Vision testing to check for refractive errors such as myopia, hyperopia, or presbyopia
  • Optos retinal imaging for detailed eye health screening
  • Anterior segment photography to evaluate the structures of the eye
  • Meibomian gland photography to assess dry eye health
  • VR headset visual field testing to check peripheral vision
  • Corneal topography to map the surface of the eyes for contact lens fittings

Our exams are tailored to your needs and may include discussion of lifestyle adjustments, treatments, or preventive measures.
